With diabetes and pre-diabetes becoming more and more prevalent in modern day society it is no surprise that a larger number of celebrities have fallen victim to this disease.
What is shocking to find out though is the people who actually have the disease that you simply would not expect to.
Here are a few celebrities that you may not have known have diabetes and pre-diabetes.
After decades of battling with high blood sugar. Tom Hanks spoke out publicly in October of 2013 that he had officially been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Hanks has since funded several charities and is outspoken on diabetes awareness.
Has gestational diabetes .This a condition that can occur during pregnancy and lead to an increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Hayek developed the condition while pregnant with her daughter in 2007. For Hayek, though, gestational diabetes caused long-bouts of nausea.
“It occurs in women who have high blood sugar levels during pregnancy. I didn’t know whether I was feeling bad because I was pregnant or whether something was seriously wrong. I was nauseated for nine months, which can be one of the symptoms.”
Larry King gave an interview with Diabetes Forecast in 2009 where he spoke publicly about his troubles with Type 2 diabetes. When his diagnosis came in 1998, it was a major shock to both him and the world. King had quit smoking years earlier in his pursuit of a healthier, longer, life. For King, his daily dealing with diabetes has become ‘the norm’.
Not long after George graduated from college a medical test showed that the famous filmmaker had diabetes. This had made him exempt from the Vietnam War draft. It also allotted him the free time necessary to create successful movies that we know him by today.
Comedian who had his last performance on the Comedy Central Roast of Charlie Sheen died early at the age of 41 in 2011. The comedian who had type 2 diabetes since his mid-twenties and struggled with weight for years, passed away right after a stroke.
Alec Baldwin was diagnosed with pre-diabetes in May 2011. The actor soon there after went on a health kick in his attempts to live healthier. He lost 30 lbs and attributed it to cutting dairy and sugar.
Was only 6 when he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. The long time vocalist, known for singing in the band Poison has since established several charities for diabetes. His appearance on the Apprentice won $500,000 for the American Diabetes Association.
Halle Berry, who initially diagnosed initially as a type 1 diabetic, but later apparently claimed she was type 2. Berry has long been an outspoken woman on diabetes awareness.
Drew Carey the comedian claims to have cured his diabetes. Carey, dropping 80 pounds in roughly six months, with a low carb diet and abundant amounts of cardio exercise. The ‘Price is Right’ host says he no longer needs medication to treat his Type 2 diabetes.
“I’m not diabetic anymore,” he told People magazine after his dramatic weight-loss. “No medication needed.”
